Cycling through the Wachau - Melk to Krems - 5 May 2010

5 May 2010. Having toured the Melk Abbey in half a day, we walked through town towards the river, contentedly licking our gelato. At the riverside, we rented bicycles from the Wachau-Touristik Bernhardt stand near the boat cruise dock. Half day rental was Euro 9 + Euro 2 for leaving the bike at Krems.
The bike ride was about 45 km. Except for a little hill near the Schonbuhel castle, it was downhill all the way, following the well signposted dedicated bicycle path beside the river - so no sweat! It was such a joyride - lovely view of the Danube and cool wind in our hair.....until it started raining halfway, then it was horribly cold and wet. We didn't have time to enjoy the lovely vineyard and towns, we just zoomed past to get quickly to our destination and out of the rain.
Finally, will we do this again? Definitely without a doubt! Err maybe get bicycles with softer seats....
Why cycle? After we fell in love cycling in Bruges in 2008, we definitely will add in a bicycle trip in our holidays. The Danube river bicycle path is one of the loveliest and best in the world.
