Vienna

Apr 14/08 - Arrived early morning on the night train from Zurich.
Found our way to Hostel Wombat- The Lounge near the Westbahnhof - had reserved a room with 6 beds, perfect for us. Breakfast was cheap and good.
Made our way to St Stephen's Cathedral. From there, we explored Vienna on foot and took a tram ride (tram #1) around the famous Ring road. A 24 hr transport ticket was Euro 5.70.
We visited the Karlskirche (St Charles church) - climbed up the scaffolding for a close-up view of the dome paintings.
Apr 15/08 - We took a tram to Schonbrunn. Four of us went to the zoo. This oldest zoo in Europe was very clean and devoid of odour that you will find in most other zoos. The animals were really closed up behind glass windows - have you really seen a hippo that close - separated only by glass? The pandas were adorable and the penguins very cute.
After the zoo, we wandered around the palace ground. Did not go into the palace building - time to leave for Prague.
At the Sudbahnhof, we relaxed at the train lounge reserved for those with 1st class tickets. Drinks and snacks were on the house. One could also order food from the menu - chargeable. We ordered the famous Austrian cake - Sacher Torte. Thought it was very dry. Wow, the lounge is available at most train stations thoughout Austria - maybe next time we will buy Eurail pass and travel throughout Austria.
