8 May 2010, we took the bus from the Lahn dock to the Dachstein cable car. Only the first part of the cable car is open this spring, the other two parts will open later for summer hiking.
We took the cable car to the first stop. From the station, it was still a long way hike to the Ice Caves entrance. We had a lady guide who spoke both German and English. It was cold inside the caves. Not the typical caves we are used to, these caves have icicles and frozen river. After an hour and about 1 km of dark subterranean world, we came out a different way from the entrance. After our eyes adjusted to the light, we were greeted with magnificent view of the Hallstattersee lake down below. We took a slow leisurely walk down to the cable car station and made our way back to Hallstatt.
